Hockey Night in Chi Psi – Week 6

Missing our Chi Psi College Pick’em now that football season is over? You’re in luck because we’re bringing it back for hockey season with our Hockey Night in Chi Psi series! Each week Justin Zolot and James Holman will be joined by a surprise guest to give their picks for the week’s top hockey face-offs.

This week’s surprise guest is Justus Johnson, Chi Delta ’14. Check out this week’s games to watch and our picks below:

ECAC Hockey Semifinal (single elimination):
#13 Cornell University vs. #2 Union College

Zolot Justin Zolot: My boys from Schenectady get the job done, and the quest for our third consecutive Whitelaw Cup continues.  Union topples hated rival Cornell in a close game 3-2.  GO U !

James James Holman: Union has been pretty much unstoppable this year and though Cornell will give them a good run for their money I see Alpha Pi coming out on top in this matchup. Union wins this in a close 3-2 matchup.
Justus Justus Johnson: The unstoppable juggernaut that is Union hockey is going to take the win here, though it’ll be a tough one. Cornell has been looking strong this season.

ECAC Hockey Semifinal (single elimination):
#14 Colgate University vs. #5 Quinnipiac University

Zolot Justin ZolotTo be the best, you need to beat the best. Quinnipiac over Colgate 4-1, setting up an epic rematch of last year’s NCAA national quarterfinal vs. Union College with the ECAC title on the line.
James James Holman: Colgate has one of the most beautiful campuses in the country and also has a pretty good hockey team this year. Quinnipiac is looking to return to the Frozen Four this year. I like Colgate in Lake Placid on a rink that is named after  Herb Brooks who coached the biggest upset in hockey history in the 1980 Winter Olympics. Colgate-4 Quinnipiac-2.
Justus Justus Johnson: Colgate takes the minty fresh upset over Quinnipiac. Definitely my dark horse contender for the finals if they make it.

Hockey East Semifinal (single elimination):
#18 University of New Hampshire vs. #9 Providence College

Zolot Justin Zolot: Former Union College head coach and now current Providence College head coach Nate Lehman knows how to get his players ready for big games. The TD Garden in downtown Boston will be packed for this one, and the Friars tame the UNH Wildcats, 3-1.
James James HolmanProvidence had a tremendous first third of the season followed by a lackluster middle, but boy have they come on strong. I think Zolot is going to be predicting an upset here and I like the Friars to extend my lead over Zolot. Providence-3 UNH-1.

Justus Justus Johnson: Strong offensive teams, but Providence’s goalie is hot right now. Win to Providence.

Hockey East Semifinal (single elimination):
#10 Notre Dame vs. #7 University of Massachusetts-Lowell

Zolot Justin Zolot: Lowell’s Riverhawks, who played in last year’s Frozen Four, know what it takes to get back to the Dance. The luck of the Irish runs out Friday night. Sorry Rudy! UML 4-Notre Dame 2

James James HolmanI really dislike having to talk about Notre Dame and this is like the third time they have been featured. What gives? Hopefully the Irish. I’m picking Lowell to beat the Irish who somehow managed a fluke road win at BC last weekend. Lowell-2 ND-0.
Justus Justus Johnson: All the Irish used their luck on St. Paddy’s Day, there’s no way they’re going to best UMass. Lucky number seven takes it.

NCHC Semifinal (single elimination):
Miami University vs. #11 North Dakota

Zolot Justin Zolot: I love Rho Delta, but I’ve been having a serious vendetta against them on the ice. Each and every week I’ve picked against them, and yet they continue to find a way to win. Sioux may be a girl’s name, but North Dakota is big and they can flat out play. Feeling good and I refuse to pump the Redhawks’ tires. North Dakota 5-Miami 2.
James James HolmanI’ve been right on a Miami upset three times already. Miami is fighting for a chance to play in the postseason and to do so they really need to win out. Despite the added motivation and their recent hot streak I look for North Dakota to continue their dominance over Miami with a win in Minneapolis. Fighting Sioux-4 Redhawks-3

Justus Justus Johnson: Going for North Dakota on this one. Miami just isn’t playing consistently enough to take down an outstanding ND team.
