Chi Psi College Pick’em – Week 5

2009 - ESPN College GameDay

This year we’ve launched the first-ever Chi Psi College Pick’em blog series!

Each Tuesday afternoon, we’ll post on Facebook which three games we’re watching that weekend, and on Thursday we’ll announce here the picks from our three “experts” (Sam Bessey, Justin Froeber and Jon Moore) and one surprise guest. This week’s surprise guest is former CO staffer and current Program for Excellence Committee guru, Brad Beskin, Sigma ’05.

Check out this week’s games to watch and our picks below:

WL_Sewanee

Washington & Lee vs. Sewanee
Facebook fan favorite to win: Washington & Lee

FroeberHead Justin Froeber: The boys on the mountain haven’t beaten W&L since 2003. I like W&L to continue their dominance over Sewanee. Washington and Lee wins.
SamHead Sam Bessey: Sewanee’s Vice Chancellor is a W&L grad and was Past #7 George Ray’s ‘best student’ during his undergraduate days. I’m sure Dr. McCardell will be pulling for Sewanee this weekend in Lexington as it’s been a decade since the Tigers last beat the General. That streak does not end Saturday on Wilson Field. No relation to Jimmy…
JonHead Jon Moore: Although D3 football is outside my knowledge base, I’m going with W&L because they’re at home and no one–and I mean NO ONE–goes to Wilson Field and pushes around the Generals!
IMG_0181 Brad Beskin: Have you been to Sewanee’s campus? It’s like Hogwarts. Thus, I predict some serious wizarding on the Tigers’ part to pull out a victory over the Generals. Besides, Br. Hurst is holding my cat for ransom in exchange for my vote.

Yale_Cornell

Yale vs. Cornell
Facebook fan favorite to win: Cornell

FroeberHead Justin Froeber: Yale has won two out of the last three but took a 45-6 beating from Cornell last year. I think Yale plays Cornell closer this year but Cornell still comes out on top. Cornell wins.
SamHead Sam Bessey: First year coach David Archer gets win number two at Yale Bowl this Saturday. Both teams beat Patriot League foes in their openers, but only one can reach 2 – 0 to start the year. Cornell won big in Ithaca last year. Yale keeps its much closer at home, but Cornell QB Jeff Mathews gets it done.
JonHead Jon Moore: Rolling with the Big Red and record breaking QB Jeff Mathews.  I’m picking Cornell to win this one.
IMG_0181 Brad Beskin: I’m terrified of bears. This one time…on a camping trip…never mind. However, this one goes to the slightly less terrifying Bulldogs (who happened to be my high school mascot).

Wisconsin_OhioState

#23 Wisconsin vs. #4 Ohio State
Facebook fan favorite: Ohio State

FroeberHead Justin Froeber: Last year’s overtime game between these two teams was a thriller and I think this weekend’s game will be as well. As the two best teams in the Big 10 square off I think that Ohio State is too talented on both sides of the ball. Buckeyes win a close one at home.
SamHead Sam Bessey:  Ohio State is not a top 5 team, and they get exposed at home Saturday night. The Badgers get one step closer to another Rose Bowl loss with a 4th quarter victory at the Horseshoe.
JonHead Jon Moore: Despite growing up in Columbus, I am the furthest thing from a Buckeye fan.  I am, however, a HUGE FAN of the Buckeye Cocktail Reception which is coming up in October.  Anyways…while I think these teams are evenly matched, I’m picking Ohio State because they’ve got the better coach and because night games at the ‘Shoe are electric.
IMG_0181 Brad Beskin: Look for me in the stands! I’ll be the one in red. Ever since their band became a YouTube sensation for its video game homage, I’ve been an Ohio State fan! Go Buckeyes! Sorry, Bucky.
