Chi Psi College Pick’em – Week 3

2009 - ESPN College GameDay

This year we’ve launched the first-ever Chi Psi College Pick’em blog series!

Each Tuesday afternoon, we’ll post on Facebook which three games we’re watching that weekend, and on Thursday we’ll announce here the picks from our three experts (Sam Bessey, Justin, and Jon Moore) and one surprise guest. This week’s surprise guest is a trustee of the The Chi Psi Educational Trust, Verne Istock, E ’62.

Check out this week’s games to watch and our picks below:

Georgia Tech vs. Duke
Facebook fan favorite to win: Georgia Tech

Justin: Duke has not beaten Georgia Tech since 2003 and with Anthony Boone, Duke’s starting QB, out with a broken collar bone, it doesn’t look like this is going to be the year that the Blue Devils bring the streak to and end. Yellow Jackets win.
SamHead Sam Bessey: I’m going against all the picks I’ve seen online, but have a feeling the Blue Devils are going to win this week.
JonHead Jon Moore: This will be the 6th meeting of Duke and Georgia Tech under their current coaches and Tech has won EVERY GAME with an average margin of 20.2 points.  Further, Duke is 2-10 in ACC road games over the past three years.  I’m going with the trends and calling for the Yellow Jackets to outlast the Blue Devils.  Sorry, Brian Gold.
VerneHead Verne Istock: Direct and to the point:  Georgia Tech for the win.

#16 UCLA vs. #23 Nebraska
Facebook fan favorite to win: UCLA

Justin: Last year the Bruins put up over 600 yards total offense as they beat the Cornhuskers 36-30. I don’t think Nebraska lets it happen at home. Nebraska’s defense come play to this week. Huskers win in a shoot-out at home.
SamHead Sam Bessey: Jim Mora leads an emotional UCLA squad to Lincoln and wins by playing better defense.  Over/under on the number of times it looks like Bo Pelini’s head will explode:  9.5.
JonHead Jon Moore: UCLA better pack their alarm clocks as they make the trip to Lincoln for the 9am PST kickoff.  Ouch.  While I think UCLA QB Brett Hundley is one of the best QB prospects in America, he won’t be able to get the Bruins over the hump. The Huskers are 21-2 at home since 2010 and will protect their turf again this weekend in a high-scoring matchup.
VerneHead Verne Istock: Nebraska will take this one.

#1 Alabama vs. #6 Texas A&M
Facebook fan favorite: Alabama

Justin: This is going to once again be one of the best games of the college football season. While Johnny football and the A&M offense is explosive and fun to watch I think Alabama has the better team. Alabama wins in a close one.
SamHead Sam Bessey:  I’m going against conventional wisdom once again, but with my dominant performance last week I can take a chance.  I see a slugfest in College Station with a turnover late being the difference in an Aggies victory.
JonHead Jon Moore: As you might expect, Texas A&M is off to a 2-0 start against in-state patsies Rice and Sam Houston State.  What you might not realize is that their defense has allowed 6.1 yards per play against these inferior opponents, which ranks 98th in the nation.  Uh Oh.  Whereas Johnny Manziel became the Heisman front runner after the 2012 A&M-Alabama game, expect AJ McCarron to go BONKERS in this game and become this year’s early Heisman favorite.  The Tide Rolls BIG TIME with a 17+ point win.
Verne Istock: #1 Alabama to win over Texas A&M
