Chi Psi College Pick’em – Week 1

2009 - ESPN College GameDay

This year we’ve launched the first-ever Chi Psi College Pick’em blog series!

Each Tuesday afternoon, we’ll post on Facebook which three games we’re watching that weekend, and on Thursday we’ll announce here the picks from our three experts (Sam Bessey, Justin, and Jon Moore) and one surprise guest. This week’s surprise guest is the newest member of the Chi Psi Executive Council, James Haltom, Σ ’03.

Check out this week’s games to watch and our picks below:

UW BoiseSt

#19 Boise State vs. Washington
Facebook fan favorite to win: Too close to call!

Justin: Their matchup last year in the Las Vegas bowl was a close one with the Broncos coming out on top 28-26. The Huskies return 20 starters from last year’s team while Boise State only returns 10. I think experience and home field advantage pays off for the Huskies. .This is the year that Boise State goes down early…Washington with a big W to open the season.
SamHead Sam Bessey: In a rematch of the 2013 Las Vegas Bowl (if you get a chance to attend a Vegas Bowl, I highly recommend it, btw), Washington will exact revenge on Boise St. and christen newly remodeled Husky Stadium with a big emotional win Saturday under the lights.
JonHead Jon Moore: UW out-gained Boise in the 2012 Las Vegas bowl, but turned the ball over three times before losing on a late FG.  The breaks go in UW’s favor this time.  Coach Sark is 7-2 at home in September and a renovated Husky Stadium should be ROCKING! Talk football with Jon Moore on Twitter.  Follow him @TheCFX.
HaltomHead James Haltom: Having only lost 5 games since 2008, the advantage goes to the Blue Broncos of Boise State

#22 Northwestern vs. Cal
Facebook fan favorite to win: Northwestern

Justin: The Wildcats welcome back 17 starters from last years 10-3 team, including backfield combo QB Kain Colter (heisman finalist) and RB Venric Mark,  and are coming off a big win over Mississippi State in the Gator Bowl. Cal is too young and inexperienced to expect a win right out of the gate. It’s going to be a tough start to the year for first year head Coach Sonny Dykes, and freshman QB Jeff Tedford. The Wildcats win big in this one.
SamHead Sam Bessey: The hills may send back the cry early, but in a repeat of their sole previous match-up in 1949, the Cats beat the Bears who debut a new coach and true freshman QB on Saturday night at Memorial Stadium in Berkeley.
JonHead Jon Moore: The Wildcats won 10 game last year, went to a bowl, and return all their key pieces.  Cal has a new coach and can say none of those things.  The Cardiac Cats keep it needlessly close, but pull away late for a double digit win.
HaltomHead James HaltomCal has a new head coach and finished with a 3-9 record in 2012 so I’m predicting a win for the Northwestern Wildcats.

UGA Clemson

#5 Georgia vs. #8 Clemson
Facebook fan favorite: Clemson

Justin: Two-high powered offenses, led by two veteran quarterbacks, and two defenses with a lot of question marks…this game is going to come down to which defense can get the stop. With a young defensive third and UGA starting safety, Josh Harvey-Clemons, suspended for the game I think Clemson’s explosive offense is going to be too much too handle…Clemson wins a close one in Death Valley.
SamHead Sam Bessey:  If the Bulldogs can get through September without a loss they will be the clear #1 team in the land.  Not sure they can, but Georgia will start off with a win in hostile Death Valley Saturday night.  The best the ACC has to offer will come up a bit short in a close one.
JonHead Jon Moore: In a game that features two of the best quarterbacks in America, I’ll take the Bulldogs because of their outstanding rushing attack.  Look for the Dawgs to quiet Tiger Stadium with a several long scoring drives in the second half.
HaltomHead James Haltom: In a toss-up game, the Bulldogs of Georgia will squeak by Tigers based on the strength of its 2012 SEC schedule.
