Fairfax, VA. Possibly the most suburban place on earth. On every corner there is one franchise after another, lining the streets for miles. Not that there is anything wrong with colorful corporate restaurants peddling dime a dozen meals down a production line that would make Henry Ford proud, into a bag, and over the counter; I just prefer restaurants with less ™ and ® in the title. Typically the best place I eat at while visiting our brothers at Alpha Omega Delta is a Brother’s house. However, I was recently taken to a place in downtown Fairfax where trademark infringements are the least of their worries, Caribbean Corner.
There is something about side doors to places. Your mind tells you that you shouldn’t go in them but the smell was dragging me in down the steps, landing me in front of the counter. Once inside you notice that this place only has two tables (there is no room for more) so every meal is served to-go. The restaurant has only one room, and it serves as kitchen, cashiers counter, and dining area. The meals are as simple as the building. You get one entrée and two sides – there are five sides and five entrées.
Rice and Peas
Soup – Chicken/Fish Tea/Red Peas Soup
Jamaican Curry Chicken
Brown Stew Chicken
Jamaican Curry Goat
I got the Brown Stew Chicken, and I highly recommend it; however, if you are feeling adventurous and don’t mind picking around little bits of bone then go with the Jamaican Curry Goat. No matter what you get here you can’t go wrong. You can order your meal in two sizes small or large. A little tip. Don’t get the small. The small might fill you up, but you’re not going to want to stop eating that soon. Things just taste better when the ingredients ™ are left out of the recipe.
