From 1919 to 1933 there was a ban, mandated by the 18th Eighteenth Amendment of The Constitution, on the sale, production, and transportation of alcohol in the United States. For fourteen years, U.S. Citizens lived their lives under the Volstead Act, which outlined rules for enforcing the ban on alcohol as well as defined which types of alcohol were prohibited. The prohibition of alcohol was a highly debated issue, and due to lack of consensual support from American citizens the ban resulted in the growth of several criminal organizations, including the mafia.
On February 24, 2012 Alpha Nu of Chi Psi took a page out of the history book, sponsoring a joint prohibition exchange with a University of Minnesota fraternity, Phi Kappa Psi Fraternity, and Kappa Kappa Gamma Sorority. The event was a huge success, and today we’ll be taking a closer look at the event in the Chi Psi Program For Excellence Spotlight.
Prohibition Swing Dance Exchange
When: Feb. 24, 2012 8:00 pm-10:00 pm
Where: The Chi Psi Lodge
Who: Chi Psi Fraternity, Kappa Kappa Gamma Sorority, Phi Kappa Psi Fraternity, a swing dance instructor
What: Please come dressed in your 1920’s best, and join us for the Chi Psi Prohibition exchange. There’ll be swing dance lessons, root beer floats, cigars, cards, and billiards. Remember this is prohibition times so the consumption and possession of alcohol are strictly prohibited. Violators will be prosecuted.
According to the Alpha Nu Brothers the event turned out to be a huge success with men and women from all three organizations boasting that it was the best exchange they had ever been to. Below is an excerpt from a letter that Alpha Nu #1, Matt Miller, wrote to the Central Office describing the event.
“The Swing Dance/Prohibition Exchange was highly successful as endorsed not only by Chi Psi members, but Kappa Kappa Gamma and Phi Kappa Psi members alike. Guests arrived at the Lodge at 8:30 where a period of introductions, house tours, and general socializing took place. After attendees were able to get root beer floats from the root beer float bar provided downstairs, and the dance instructor was able to teach and demonstrate a variety of basic swing dance moves to those daring enough to try around 8:30 PM. Those who were a little shyer were able to watch and socialize with each other downstairs at the float bar, and through a variety of alternative activities including billiards. Following the end of swing dance lessons, the exchange came to a conclusion with many of the guests, both from Kappa Kappa Gamma and Phi Kappa Psi alike, boasting that it had been one of if not the most fun they had had at an exchange.”
Congrats to Alpha Nu for putting on a great Program For Excellence event. The Alpha did a great job thinking outside of the box to create a fun and educational environment for Chi Psi Brothers and guests.
