“That would never work here. We have such a unique environment here at blah blah blah blah blah University.”
This has to be the most common excuse used amongst defeatist fraternity men across the nation. If I had a nickel for every time I heard that one! These words resonate through the halls of Lodges, Dorms, apartments and restaurants throughout the course of my Alpha Visits and they just don’t come together to form a valid excuse.
I recently spent some time on one of our beautiful campuses and encountered the typical defeatist attitude towards an approach I suggested for improving sorority relations. It was an unconventional approach on that particular campus but works well on many campuses across the nation. The brothers did not think it would work because it was different from what had always been done at their University. However, when I shared this idea with a young sorority lady on campus she was highly impressed. Her heart melted, and she was ready to become more involved with Chi Psi from the mere thought of the idea.
The approach was different, unconventional and fresh. It was something no one had ever experienced on that campus and that no one else was doing. That is why it could be so effective!!!!!!
In my blog The Road Less Traveled – The Path of Leadership I showed you a video of a man dancing like a fool who ended up being the leader of a huge “dance party”. I would like to revisit that video for this blog.
When the young man began to dance you may have thought he was crazy, one skittle shy of fully tasting the rainbow. But then he found another person whose cheese had slid off his cracker and they began to dance together. A few more crazy people join in and then a few more. Before you know it the entire crowd is running to join in a dance party that looks like so much fun. All of sudden, it’s not so crazy anymore. All of sudden, what once looked ridiculous is now normal and people are flocking to join.

Challenge the Status Quo!!! Do Something Different!!! BE AN INDIVIDUAL!!!! Take your own path!!!!!
