Burgers, good ole American burgers! In Boulder, Colorado no one does them better than The Sink. The Sink opened in 1923 as the Sunken Gardens. Later the name was changed to The Sink and food was not served for 6 years. In 1955 food returned to The Sink. The Sink Burger was introduced and has been around ever since.
When walking into The Sink you can’t help but notice the artwork adorning the walls. The “Off the Wall Art Gallery” was started in 1950 and restored in 1995 and just adds to the “Boulderesque” atmosphere at The Sink. But I didn’t come here for the history, I came for the food.
The Sink Burger is a classic burger with lettuce, tomato, onion and topped with their famous Sink Hickory Sauce. But there isn’t really anything exciting about lettuce and hickory sauce, so I went with something different.
The National Burger, go America! This patriotic patty has four pieces of meat on it, yes four!! Smoked pork, smoked bacon, Canadian bacon (What could be more American than Canadian bacon, right?) and of course a patty of Colorado beef. This burger was so good I didn’t know whether to thank my waiter or salute him. Oh yeah and somewhere amidst all that patriotism and pork there is a big ole piece of Cheddar cheese.
The National was not the only burger that had what it took to bring out the ole’ plastic money, The Southwest burger gets an honorable mention as well. This burger has salsa, cheddar cheese, sour cream and guacamole and proved to be just the break I needed one busy Thursday in Boulder.
Buchanan’s Coffee Pub is caddy-cornered to The Sink and deserves some respect in this Blog because it is safe to say that 90% of the recent Chi Psis at Boulder were brought to Chi Psi over a cup of Buchanan’s coffee. Another place that deserves some recognition is The Buff. This place has been highlighted on the Travel Channel show Man vs. Food.
But of course the best food in Boulder one Wednesday night wasn’t at a restaurant but was at the corner of College and 14th street. Now I don’t want to skew anyones perception of me so brace yourself when I say that I am southern, and as a southerner am required to know how to cook a whole pig.
