Chi Psi is credited with being the first fraternity to have a paid traveling fraternity secretary. The office of “Visitor” was provided for by the Convention of 1889. Frederick A. Pike, Iota 1885, was elected the first Visitor at that Convention. In 1905, Theodore B. Brown, Pi 1898, became the first paid Visitor to devote full-time to Fraternity activities.
Since that time, the Visitor position has evolved to include a variety of administrative and leadership responsibilities. These Leadership Consultants, as they are often called, spend much of their time on the road visiting Alphas. Their primary function is advising the undergraduates in organizational management, fiscal accountability, alumni relations, ritual and tradition, risk management, and recruitment practices.
